Accounting in British ColumbiaSmall business accounting in Vancouver and BC

What monthly accounting covers, what we do at year end, who it fits, and what it leaves out.

Orbis Accounting Ltd. does the monthly accounting for small businesses across British Columbia. We keep the books, file GST and PST, run payroll, and prepare the T1 or T2 return at year end. The monthly fee is fixed, and the year-end return is quoted separately. One person handles your accounts all year.

We work remotely from West Vancouver, in English and Mandarin. This page sets out what the work covers and what it does not. Audit, review and other public-accounting engagements are not part of it, and we are a bookkeeping practice, not a CPA firm.

What the service includes

The work, month by month and at year end

What monthly accounting covers

We categorize every transaction, reconcile the bank and credit card accounts, and close each month. You receive a profit and loss statement and a balance sheet, with the items that need your answer listed.

We file GST with the CRA and PST with the province, on the reporting periods each has assigned you. We run payroll as well: source deductions, T4s, and a record of employment when someone leaves.

What happens at year end

We prepare the income tax return from the books we kept. For a sole proprietor or a self-employed person that is a T1 with the business schedule. For an incorporated business it is a T2 and its schedules, with the owner’s personal return handled alongside where it applies.

Because the books were closed monthly, the return starts from finished records. Where they are not finished, catch-up work comes first and is quoted as its own number before we begin.

Accounting and bookkeeping

Bookkeeping is recording and reconciling what happened. Accounting is what gets built from that record: the filings, the statements and the returns. We do both for the same client. The monthly plan is one fixed fee, and the year-end work is quoted separately.

If you are unsure which one you need, tell us where your books stand. The written quote says what the work involves.

Who it fits

Owner-run businesses in British Columbia that need the monthly work done and the filings made on time: sole proprietors, incorporated businesses, and online stores on Shopify or Stripe. We work in QuickBooks Online, Xero and Sage 50.

It also fits a business whose books are behind. Catch-up work is quoted as one number once we have seen how far back it goes.

What is not included

Audit, review and other public-accounting engagements. We are a bookkeeping practice, not a CPA firm, and a lender or investor who requires one of those needs a CPA firm for it.

Sales tax outside British Columbia. PST is a provincial system, so ask before assuming we fit a business based in another province.

How the fee works

A fixed monthly fee scoped to your transaction volume, with no hourly billing. We send a written quote within one business day, and the price is agreed before work begins. Catch-up work, software setup and tax returns are scoped separately from the monthly plan.

More on the nine tasks we take on, how the plans are scoped, and where bookkeeping stops and the tax return starts.
