Bookkeeping services for Surrey small businesses

Published on Published

Construction, trucking and logistics, trades and retail across several town centres, with no drop-offs and no travel charge.

By Orbis Accounting Ltd.

Short answer: we keep the books for Surrey small businesses: monthly bookkeeping, GST and PST, payroll with T4s and ROEs, subcontractor slips, and T1 and T2 returns, at a fixed monthly fee. We are in West Vancouver and the work is online, so distance changes nothing about the price or how fast you hear back. The quote arrives in writing within one business day.

What we do for Surrey businesses

  • Monthly bookkeeping, with job and vehicle costs tracked where they matter
  • Payroll, T4s and ROEs, and WorkSafeBC reporting
  • T5018 slips for subcontractor payments in construction
  • GST and PST, including PST on materials for real property work
  • T1 and T2 returns, and catch-up when the books are behind

What is different about the books in Surrey

Surrey is the largest business base south of the Fraser and the most varied. Construction and trades bring subcontractors, T5018 slips, holdbacks and WorkSafeBC clearance letters. Trucking and logistics bring vehicle costs, fuel and drivers who may be employees or contractors, a line that decides payroll and has to be drawn on the facts, not the contract’s title.

Your Surrey business licence

The City of Surrey requires every business in Surrey to hold a valid licence, home-based ones included, and a home-based business has to meet the City’s home-based business regulations. Some uses are not allowed from home, among them automotive services and tow-truck operations, and the rules bar outside signage and goods sold on the premises. A tenant needs the owner’s permission before a licence is issued, and a licence is valid for one year from the application date. Businesses working in other municipalities can add an inter-municipal licence.

Questions Surrey owners ask

Does it cost more because Surrey is further from you?

No. The price is set by transaction volume and what needs filing. There is no travel, so there is no travel charge.

Are my drivers employees or contractors?

It depends on the working relationship, not on what the contract calls it: control, tools, chance of profit and how integrated the work is. The guide on employees and contractors sets out the tests.

Do I need T5018 slips for my subcontractors?

If construction is your main business, you report payments to subcontractors on T5018 slips. The T5018 guide covers who files and when.

Can I run my business from home in Surrey?

Most businesses can, with a licence and within the home-based business regulations. Automotive services and tow-truck operations are not allowed from home.
